Design and facilities
The center’s four‑story museum tower houses interactive exhibits, while a new branch of the Chicago Public Library offers community resources. Landscaped lawns, pathways and gardens were created by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects in partnership with Interactive Design Architects (IDEA).
The museum opens its doors to the public.
Visitors can explore the permanent collection, which includes artifacts from the 2008 campaign and the two presidential terms. The site also features a recreation area intended for youth programs and public events.

Political messages amid celebration
Former President Barack Obama addressed the crowd, saying the center should “serve as an affirmation of just how special, how precious, our democracy truly is.” He was joined by former first lady Michelle Obama, who wore a custom suit, and their daughters Malia and Sasha.
Vice President Kamala Harris echoed the sentiment, noting the center’s opening on Juneteenth highlights the ongoing struggle for equality. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton added that the venue will help future generations “understand the power of civic engagement.”
Community response
Local residents expressed mixed feelings. Some praised the economic boost and cultural enrichment the center promises, while others raised concerns about gentrification and the displacement of longtime neighborhoods. City officials said a task force will monitor housing impacts over the next five years.
