Staying safe on the road in a gig economy – RoSPA Workplace Safety Blog

If you’ve ever driven a car or ridden a motorcycle on a short-term contract, chances are you’ve participated in the gig economy. In fact, millions of adults in the UK are now participants in the system as drivers and riders, whether they’re aware of it or not. But how can you and other road users stay safe?

What is the gig economy?

The term ‘gig economy’ is used to describe the 1.1 million people in the UK who work in a free market system in which temporary positions are common place. The gig economy is made up of three main components; the independent workers paid by the gig, the consumers who require a specific service or a particular item delivered; and the companies that connect the worker to the consumer.

For individuals working within the system, a job is usually for a specified period of time, whereby freelance and self-employed

28 Best Places For Men’s Clothing Online

Where do you shop? Chances are it’s not in the store. In the US, 76% of adults are online shoppers — 62% of which are regular online shoppers, according to a study conducted by Marist Poll. But then what do you put in your browser? For men, there is no single answer — and if you only have a destination or two, you’re missing out. Maybe you go to Uniqlo for staples — but what of Amazon Basics, Dickies, or Rhone? Mr. Porter is the spot for select high-end menswear, but if you stick to that, you’ll miss out on the Ami Paris, All Saints, and the many other fashion outlets that keep the high-end looks close to home. J. Crew could dress the most stylish preppy man on the planet, but Bonobos, Hugh & Crye, and Rowing Blazers all have plenty to offer in that department too.

Mississippi Designer Takes Hoodvenchy to NY Fashion Week

By TERRI COWART FRAZIER, The Vicksburg Post

VICKSBURG, Ms. (AP) — Finding a niche in the fashion industry takes determination, dedication and, of course, an eye for design.

Just ask Vicksburg resident Raymond Banks, who has recently returned from the Big Apple where he was one of the fashion designers invited to participate in New York Fashion Week.

Banks got his start designing bowties, and from there, he said his love of fashion grew.

“I started designing in 2013. I made a bowtie for a program around Black History Month at our church, and from that one bowtie I catapulted into the fashion industry,” Banks said.

On the Plus Side: Men’s Fashion Gets Extra

O

h, James Corbin. The 23-year-old boy from Brixton, a rising star in men’s modeling with a disarmingly cherubic mien and the kind of big, beautiful eyes that strike you like deep pools of joy and wisdom, is without doubt the most beautiful person I’ve ever met in real life — even if I found myself singing his name to the Jeremy Corbyn x Seven Nation Army mash-up. Perhaps it is all that revolutionary zeal: at 6ft 1in, with a pout that could launch an Ancient Greek fleet, young Corbin is making waves as one of the few — indeed, only — plus-size male models in the luxury fashion game. ‘I sincerely want change,’ says Corbin, sitting at home in Kensal Rise. ‘I just want to have the full experience that a normal model would get and I feel like I deserve that. Plus-size people deserve that and we don’t

Ultra-Processed Foods May Impair Cognition in Elderly
Processed or ultra-processed?

An article earlier this year in the European Journal of Nutrition reported that high consumption of ultra-processed foods is linked to worse-than-average performance on one particular test of cognitive function in older US adults (60+ years-old) who did not have chronic diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. The particular test was “Animal Fluency.” Never heard of it? Me either. Keep reading.

The study included 2,700 participants, average age 69. Participants were asked to recall what they ate in the prior 24 hours. Foods were “classified according to NOVA, a food classification based on the extent and purpose of industrial food processing, into four mutually exclusive groups: (1) unprocessed or minimally processed foods, (2) processed culinary ingredients, (3) processed foods, and (4) UPFs [ultra-processed foods].”

Ultra-processed foods? “…most foods described as “Frozen meals” or “Lunchables”, as well as some items described as consumed in “Restaurant fast food/pizza”

The Best Men’s Fashion from the 2022 Emmy Awards

Once upon a time, making a splash on the red carpet was largely reserved for the ladies, but recent years have proven that the guys can garner just as much style game. While we all still love the look of a classic, perfectly cut suit, nowadays, it’s not unusual to see gentlemen branching out from basic blazers and tuxes to take some sartorial risks and have a bit of fashionable fun. Need proof? Tonight’s Emmy Awards are just the ticket.

As the creative world hands out awards to the best and the brightest of film and television, there’s sure to be plenty said about the dramatic gowns and showstopping looks on the ladies, but we’d be remiss not to point out the style stars in the men’s section as well. From Nicholas Braun to Lee Jung-jae, there were so many stand out men’s looks stepping down the red carpet, we

Overweight US Adolescents Eat More Ultra-Processed Foods

“One little piece won’t hurt . . .”

An article in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found an association between overweight/obesity and consumption of ultra–processed foods in US adolescents.

The study looked at 3,600 adolescents who reported their food intake over a 24-hour period. The results are pretty strong: the more ultra-processed food consumed, the greater the odds of overweight and obesity.

Jan at The Low Carb Diabetic blog reported that:

Ultra-processed foods make up ‘two-thirds of calories consumed by children and teens’
Experts from Tufts University in Massachusetts studied two decades of dietary data to 2018 and found that the amount of calories young people consumed from ultra-processed foods jumped from 61 per cent to 67 per cent.

I’m not paying for the JAND scientific report so I don’t know how they defined ultra-processed foods. The definition varies quite
