AMANN, a global leader in the sewing thread industry, is redefining the role of thread in apparel through five innovative products designed to enhance sustainability, durability, and functionality. These innovations address challenges from recycling to visibility, marking a shift from thread as a mere assembly component to a strategic element in garment design and manufacturing.
Smart Stitch Transforms Disassembly
The first innovation, Smart Stitch, was developed in partnership with Resortecs, a Belgian circular technology company. This heat-dissolvable thread allows garments to be disassembled efficiently, enabling the separation of fabrics, trims, and other components for repair, reuse, or recycling. When activated under specific thermal conditions in a specialized oven, it dissolves, facilitating the removal of elements like elastic bands and labels that typically hinder recycling processes.
Cedric Vanhoeck, Co-Founder & CEO of Resortecs, explains that Smart Stitch performs like conventional thread during a garment’s use phase but enables controlled disassembly at the end of its life. For industrial-scale recycling, Resortecs’ Smart Disassembly™ system works alongside the thread to automatically separate components, maximizing material recovery while preserving textile quality.
Real-world adoption of Smart Stitch has already shown impact. Decathlon, for instance, integrated the technology into swimwear production. While the brand previously used elastane-free fabric, elastic bands remained a recycling barrier. Smart Stitch enabled the separation of garment panels and bands, allowing material recovery. Approximately 350,000 garments have been produced using this method, alongside 50,000 denim products for Inditex’s Bershka. It has also been applied in ski jacket production for the European market, highlighting its versatility across categories.
Expanding the Range of Innovations
Beyond Smart Stitch, AMANN has introduced four additional innovations. AeoniQ™ Fil, a biodegradable thread made from renewable cellulose fibers, offers high performance during use while decomposing within 12 weeks under industrial composting conditions. The thread supports monomaterial designs, simplifying recycling for cellulose-based textiles and earning the 2026 Texprocess Innovation Award in the “Ecological Quality” category.
Waterfil, a water-soluble thread, addresses temporary seams and joker tag attachments. It dissolves completely with water, eliminating manual removal steps that can strain fabrics. Sera Reflect and Isa Reflect introduce retroreflective properties to seams and embroidery, enhancing visibility in low-light conditions without adding separate features. These threads reflect artificial light back to its source, integrating safety directly into design.
For outdoor applications, Isacord Recycled UV provides a durable, lightfast embroidery thread made from 100% recycled polyester with GRS certification. It withstands intense sunlight while maintaining color and quality, addressing the need for UV-resistant solutions in products exposed to harsh conditions.
Workwear Innovations Extend Product Lifespan
The ability to isolate and replace specific components without compromising the entire garment represents a shift in sustainable manufacturing practices. For industries requiring constant visibility, such as construction or emergency services, retroreflective threads like Sera Reflect and Isa Reflect minimize downtime and resource consumption by integrating safety features directly into the design. Smart Stitch’s compatibility with automated disassembly systems ensures scalability, allowing large-scale operations to integrate these solutions seamlessly into existing workflows. The technology’s adaptability to various fabric types and trim configurations further demonstrates its potential in diverse workwear applications.
AMANN’s Focus on India
India’s position as a key market for AMANN stems from its growing emphasis on manufacturing excellence and sustainability initiatives. By aligning with India’s infrastructure developments, the company aims to support local manufacturers in adopting advanced, eco-conscious production methods.
