Prada opened Milan Fashion Week with its SS27 collection, which centered on an everyday garment, the skirt, and challenged conventional styling norms. The collection was a result of designers Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons presenting the season as “the skirt as object,” and experimenting with identity through constant variation.
Materials used in the collection ranged from pencils and pleats to transparent fabrics, florals, and elaborate embellishments. Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons made use of various materials to create unique pieces. Some of the most striking pieces resembled jeweled objects, covered in crystal flowers, beads, and sequins that turned knee-length versions into moving surfaces of colour and light.
Other looks featured pleating interrupted by glossy discs, while simpler midi silhouettes offered a restrained counterpoint. The designers’ decision to focus an entire runway on a single piece forced them to rethink proportion, texture, and cultural meaning. By stripping the wardrobe down to one form, the show highlighted how minute changes can generate entirely new visual narratives.
This tactic resonates beyond high fashion into everyday dressing. The collection also revived the iconic banana heel, first seen in Prada’s Fall 2007 line, now appearing under pointed pumps and minimalist sandals as a subtle archival reference. They used the banana heel to add a touch of nostalgia to the collection.
Colour provided the sharpest punctuation, with purple, acid green, lacquer red, and saturated pink cutting through black, white, and muted neutrals. Pink populated skirt suits and soft separates, green flashed in accessories and floral panels, red appeared in leather accents, while violet and amethyst hues ran through beadwork. The use of colour added depth to the collection.
