Hiking Sandal Becomes Surprise Fashion Hit

This summer, the Genesis sandal from Xero Shoes has become a surprise hit in the fashion world, with collaborations with J.Crew and Literary Sport gaining attention on Instagram and Substack. The sandal, which features a thin rubber sole and adjustable corded upper, was originally designed for barefoot running almost 20 years ago.

Husband and wife Steven Sashen and Lena Phoenix founded Xero in 2009, with Sashen creating the first prototype using sheets of Vibram rubber and cord from Home Depot. The company initially sold DIY kits, which evolved into the Genesis sandal, an adjustable and minimalist design inspired by traditional Mexican huaraches.

The Genesis sandal’s design has remained largely unchanged since its introduction, with Xero owning a patent on the construction. The sandal features a thin outsole that rolls slightly up the side of the foot and is secured with a single piece of knotted cord. This design has appealed to performance-driven customers, including hikers and runners.

Xero has expanded its product line to include open- and closed-toe footwear, but the Genesis sandal has gained newfound attention in the fashion world. This is partly due to the similarity between the Genesis and a sandal featured in Miu Miu‘s spring 2024 collection, which retails for over $900.

The fashion crowd has taken notice of the Genesis sandal, with some comparing it to the Miu Miu design. Laura Reilly mentioned the Xero sandal in her newsletter, praising its technical prowess and versatility. The sandal has been worn with a variety of outfits, from casual to dressy, and has become a favorite among fashion enthusiasts.

Xero‘s creative director, Kristina Funck, notes that the brand is finding its niche at the intersection of wellness and functional clothing, a trend that emphasizes comfortable clothing. The company’s collaborations with J.Crew and Literary Sport have helped to further boost the sandal’s popularity.

The collaborations with J.Crew and Literary Sport were organic, with J.Crew‘s creative director, Olympia Gayot, reaching out to Xero after spotting a friend wearing the Genesis sandals on vacation, and Xero noticing that Literary Sport was styling their editorials with Genesis sandals, so they reached out.

At just $50, the Genesis sandal has become a favorite among fashion enthusiasts and outdoor enthusiasts alike. With its unique blend of functionality and style, it is sure to remain a staple in many people’s wardrobes.

Its versatility, comfort, and affordability make it an attractive option for anyone looking for a stylish and functional sandal. And with Xero‘s commitment to quality, they will likely continue to be a major player in the fashion world for years to come.
