Google’s newly unveiled Universal Cart is set to dramatically shift the online shopping dynamic, leveraging the company’s 90% market share of global web searches. The Universal Cart, built on AI models, allows users to add products to a single cart across various Google applications, including Google Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail.

The new feature, announced at Google’s I/O 2026 conference, represents a significant shift in e-commerce from search-based browsing to what the industry calls “agentic commerce“.

According to the report, Google’s Universal Cart will start rolling out in the United States in summer 2026, initially across Google Search and the Gemini app, with YouTube and Gmail to follow.

The rollout will first go live across prominent brands, including Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, and Wayfair, as well as some Shopify merchants, such as Fenty and Steve Madden.

Google also announced a new 24/7 AI personal assistant, Gemini Spark, which will be integrated with the Universal Cart, enabling it to handle the shopping journey end-to-end and make purchases on consumers’ behalf, providing a more tailored streaming experience for users.

This development marks a shift from Google designing AI shopping as a discovery tool to a “decision-making” agent that could minimize the need for direct brand engagement, according to experts.

How Universal Cart Works

Once a product is added to a user’s basket, the agentic AI comes into play, continuously searching for the best deals, comparing compatibility between selected items, creating price alerts, and checking stock of products across Google’s entire search index.

This means there is no wasted moment in the shopping experience on a Google-based platform, as the AI works to optimize the shopping journey, making it more efficient and convenient for users to find what they are looking for, such as the latest engagement ring trends.

For instance, the AI can check the supply chain of a product to ensure timely delivery, or suggest alternative products based on a user’s search history.

Impact on Consumer Shopping Behavior

The introduction of Universal Cart and Gemini Spark is expected to significantly impact consumer shopping behavior, as users become accustomed to a more streamlined and personalized shopping experience, which may also influence their decisions when buying hats or other products.

As the e-commerce market continues to evolve, Google’s Universal Cart and Gemini Spark are poised to play a major role in shaping the future of online shopping.

The 60 billion product listings in Google’s catalog will be leveraged to provide users with a vast array of options, making the shopping experience more efficient and convenient.
