Diesel’s Spring/Summer 2027 show at Milan Fashion Week carried extra weight because it marked the culmination of a leadership change announced only days earlier, when the label confirmed that Glenn Martens would step down as creative director after six years of guiding the brand.

The Belgian designer, who joined Diesel in 2020, revitalized the company with experimental denim, bold campaigns, and unconventional runway concepts. His farewell presentation, staged in a purpose-built club space, reflected his signature style and offered a final showcase of his creative vision.

A Blurred Line Between Runway and Nightlife

The SS27 show, held at Via Moncucco 35, featured 200 performers interacting directly with guests, turning the runway into an immersive performance arena. Marseille-based artist collective (LA)HORDE and concept designer Dennis Vanderbroeck collaborated on the event, blending fashion, music, and visual art to blur the boundaries between a traditional catwalk and a nightclub atmosphere.

The label described the production as a celebration of “freedom, confidence, connection, and desire,” aligning the message with its For Successful Living philosophy. This thematic focus resonated with Martens’ departure, leaving the brand with a sense of openness and an invitation to explore new creative directions.

Familiar Yet Unfamiliar

The collection played with proportion, surface, and styling, making familiar wardrobe pieces feel slightly strange. A head-to-toe pale look featured a collared shirt and straight trousers with exaggerated glove-like cuffs, accompanied by a soft, collapsing bag that challenged conventional silhouettes.

This tension between the recognizable and the unexpected ran throughout the series. Sleeves extended beyond typical lengths, garments appeared distorted yet remained close-fitting, and classic shapes were altered with unusual details that invited a second look.

Beyond Denim

While denim remains central to Diesel, Martens expanded the brand’s visual language to include shirts, trousers, gloves, and handbags that now carry the same disruptive energy as the iconic jeans.

The collection showcased Martens’ signature approach: destabilizing familiar clothing through unconventional treatments, inventive construction, and altered proportion. His tenure transformed runway shows into immersive experiences, and this final presentation encapsulated that vision in a single, cohesive narrative.

As Martens shifts his focus to Maison Margiela, where he has been creative director since 2025, Diesel has yet to announce his successor.
