Billie Eilish Unrecognizable in New Film Role

Billie Eilish is set to make her feature-film debut in the upcoming adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, directed by Sarah Polley. Eilish was recently photographed on set in Toronto, looking unrecognizable in midcentury-style clothing and chestnut-brown hair.

The photos show Eilish in a cherry-red sweater top, a red-and-gray-checkered A-line skirt, pearl stud earrings, and a bright red lip, complete with hair coiffed to ’50s perfection.

The Bell Jar, the sole novel written by poet Sylvia Plath, follows the psychological breakdown of 19-year-old Esther Greenwood as she moves from Boston to New York City for an internship at a women’s magazine.

The novel explores mental health, critiques gender roles, and examines the ideals of womanhood. The beloved book was previously adapted for a 1979 movie starring Marilyn Hassett and Julie Harris.

While The Bell Jar marks Eilish’s first-ever feature-film role, the singer previously made her acting debut in Swarm, a Prime Video dark comedy series created by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover.

Eilish played a supporting role as Eva, a manipulative cult leader who recruits new members under the guise of female empowerment. In a 2023 interview, Eilish talked about giving up her acting ambitions after launching her pop career.

Eilish may just be getting her start in the film industry, but she and her brother, Finneas, already have two Oscars under their belts: a Best Original Song win for their 2024 Barbie track “What Was I Made For?” and another Best Original Song award for the 2022 title track of the James Bond No Time to Die film.

Polley, who previously won an Oscar for her work on the 2022 drama Women Talking, wrote the adapted screenplay for and is attached to direct The Bell Jar. They are joined by a talented cast, including Carey Mulligan, who will play Mrs. Greenwood, Esther’s mother.

Heated Rivalry’s Connor Storrie is also rumored to be part of the cast.

The film is currently still in production.

An official release date has yet to be announced.
